A small work does not necessarily offer a smaller experience
Vivienne Roberts Projects presents A Winter’s Tale, an exhibition of small-scale works by 49 artists, bringing together painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, sculpture and mixed media.
At a time when images are so often encountered at speed and at a distance, these works ask us to come closer. Their intimate scale concentrates the gaze, allowing details, gestures and shifts of colour to become newly perceptible. A small work does not necessarily offer a smaller experience; its physical dimensions can instead create a more sustained and intimate encounter.
The 4 drawings presented in the exhibition are small spaces, playful little gardens. Working on Chinese cursive notebook paper, I use its grids, borders and lines to create enclosed spaces that evoke peacefulness and intimacy.
The works shown here are a selection from a series of 56 drawings. Taken together, the series forms a succession of rooms, patios, cloisters and secret gardens, each slightly different from the next. Some are ordered and architectural, while others become denser and more overgrown through colour and repeated marks.
I think of them as small private places where one can pause and take refuge.
